Who We Are

The fundamental mission of EPCOG is to facilitate economic growth and provide services vital to the region's success.

The Eastern Plains Council of Governments (EPCOG) is a voluntary association of local governments to establish a federally recognized economic development and planning district. The region is located within eastern New Mexico and includes seven counties, twenty-one municipalities, and two unique districts.
EPCOG operates with the intent to catalyze the success of its local government communities.

The Eastern Plains Council of Governments (EPCOG) serves a broad range of functions to support local governments across the eastern region of New Mexico. Here are some of the specific roles and initiatives they are involved in:

  1. Economic Development: EPCOG works to boost economic growth in the region by helping communities with grant writing, project management, and development strategies. They often collaborate with local businesses and stakeholders to create jobs, attract investment, and enhance the economic resilience of rural areas.

  2. Community Planning: EPCOG provides technical assistance to municipalities in areas such as land use planning, zoning, and comprehensive plan development. They assist local governments in preparing for growth and ensuring sustainable development practices.

  3. Infrastructure Support: The organization helps local governments plan and secure funding for critical infrastructure projects, including roads, water and wastewater systems, and public facilities. EPCOG assists in navigating the complexities of state and federal funding processes.

  4. Workforce Development: Understanding the needs of rural areas, EPCOG engages in initiatives that aim to improve workforce skills and increase employment opportunities. They may partner with educational institutions, local businesses, and state agencies to develop training programs and other workforce solutions.

  5. Grant Management and Funding Assistance: EPCOG offers support in identifying funding opportunities, writing grant proposals, and managing grants. They help local governments secure the financial resources necessary for various projects, including those related to health, safety, and community services.

  6. Regional Collaboration: As a council of governments, EPCOG plays a key role in fostering cooperation among neighboring communities. They facilitate regional planning efforts and encourage shared services and resources to address common challenges.

  7. Special Initiatives: EPCOG is often involved in special projects tailored to the unique needs of the eastern plains region. This could include housing development, healthcare access improvements, and efforts to address the challenges of rural living.

Overall, EPCOG serves as a vital resource for local governments in the eastern plains of New Mexico, helping them navigate challenges and capitalize on opportunities for growth and improvement.
